If you’re barely hanging on until Outlander‘s eighth and final season, which will air in 2026, the show’s prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood, might help fill the void. But die-hard fans of the Starz show and original book series might be wondering what the prequel series is based on.
Outlander: Blood of My Blood takes fans of the historical drama back in time to follow two new love stories: that of the parents of the protagonists from the original series, Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp, played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe, respectively.
Here’s what you need to know about the prequel series.
Is ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ Based On A Book?
No, Outlander: Blood of My Blood is not based on a book, unlike the original Outlander television series. Diana Gabaldon, the author of the Outlander book series, confirmed on her website that she is working on “at least one” prequel series that will tell the story of Jamie’s parents, but this remains unpublished.
Gabaldon did have a hand in Outlander: Blood of My Blood, writing the penultimate and finale episodes in this season, which will air on September 26 and October 10, respectively.
Outlander, which debuted its first season in 2014, is based on Diana Gabaldon’s book series of the same name. Each season has closely followed a book from the series in order, aside from season 7, which had the mammoth task of adapting the end of book 6, A Breath of Snow and Ashes; book 7, An Echo in the Bone; and book 8, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood.
Season 8 will adapt the ninth book in Gabaldon’s series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone. Though the show will end here, Gabaldon has confirmed that she is working on a tenth book, which will be the final book of the main series. “Though there may be other companion books and side stories, depending on how long I live,” the 73-year-old author wrote in a May Facebook post, per Parade.
What Is ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’ About?
Outlander: Blood of My Blood is about Jamie and Claire’s parents and their love stories. Claire’s parents, Julia (Hermione Corfield) and Henry (Jeremy Irvine), begin their love story on the battlefields of the Western Front during World War I. Jamie’s parents, Ellen (Harriet Slater) and Brian (Jamie Roy), fall in love in the meadows of Scotland in the early 18th century.

A trailer revealed that, like the original Outlander series, there will be a time travel element that allows Claire’s parents to intersect with the 18th-century timeline.
Are Jamie & Claire in ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’?
No, Jamie and Claire will not be main characters in Outlander: Blood of My Blood. The show’s setting predates their births.
It remains to be seen whether they will appear in the show as infants later in the series.
