Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have come a long way in their relationship as exes, and it shows in their body language, according to an expert.
Celebrity body language expert Inbaal Honigman went through the former couple’s photo history for Hello! magazine, where she noticed an evolution from their romance to their divorce and beyond. In the early days, Garner “would smile such a wide grin, that her whole face would join in the party” while Affleck “would often flash a ‘cool guy’ look, which was a neutral facial expression.”

Honigman thought The Accountant 2 star’s expressions “were not joyful” and perhaps predicted trouble in the relationship later on. “Gazing slightly away from his beautiful partner, his lips would be pressed thin, indicating tension. Whether it was the relationship that made him tense or the tension was brought on by the rest of his life, is hard to say,” she said.
Now, things have shifted for them. The divorce is behind them, life is about raising their three children, Violet, 19, Fin, 16, and Samuel, 13, amicably. “When they stand together, Jen and Ben are seen side by side, or at times, facing each other, both are sympathetic ways to stand together, Honigman added. “We don’t see one of them standing facing away from the other; there are no signs of antipathy or resentment.”
There were some tense years after their split for Garner while Affleck worked through his sobriety journey and allegedly had an affair with their nanny. In 2016, the Yes Day star gave an interview to Vanity Fair that fans will never forget.
“He’s the most brilliant person in any room, the most charismatic, the most generous. He’s just a complicated guy,” Garner remarked. “I always say, ‘When his sun shines on you, you feel it.’ But when the sun is shining elsewhere, it’s cold. He can cast quite a shadow.”
Affleck might not be the easiest person to have a relationship with, but he’s found a good groove with Garner. He even praised her in a March 2025 GQ interview.
“I’m really lucky that I have a really good co-parent and partner in Jennifer Garner, the kids’ mom, who’s wonderful and great, and we work together well,” he said.
The duo has been through the fire together, but in the end, Affleck and Garner are a united front for the sake of their kids.
