I’ve had a love/hate relationship with my naturally curly hair since, well, birth. If the weather is just right (no humidity, no rain, and temperatures below 75 degrees Fahrenheit), it’s manageable. But living in New York, those perfect conditions are few and far between. Most of the time, it’s frizzy and unruly, so I spend a good portion of my mornings blowing it out and straightening it. After doing this for most of my adult life, my hair became fried. Last year, I decided I would give my hair a year-long break from heat to recover, so I chopped off about six inches and put the blow dryer and straightener in storage. I’ve spent the last year testing countless curl products, searching for a lightweight option that would provide definition without feeling crunchy and stand up to the summer humidity of New York. Surprisingly, I finally found one that gave me everything I was looking for, and it’s only $7 at Walmart.
